CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Patchouli Knowledge
CANON: Touhou Project
CANON REFERENCE: Here.
AGE: 25, she's at least 100 in canon.
GENDER: Female
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: Librarian
APPEARANCE: Here. The only differences is that she dresses in a contemporary fashion and her hair stops at her waist.
PERSONALITY: A dark and taciturn woman, Patchouli is hardly the sort anyone would consider excitable at all, and not the most social of people around. She has few friends, which suits her just fine, she would much rather prefer the company of a good book. Frankly, she considered most people to be rather foolish most of the time, there's not enough people she considers reasonably intelligent around to dissuade her of this particular notion. She is a cynic through and thuough, though. She has little faith in humanity and is distrustful of most people.
To her, the pursuit of knowledge is her greatest desire, this is one of the few things that would reliably get Patchouli heading out to acquire rare texts or books - she is more than willing to go far afield to get her hands on these despite her ill health. She needs no excuse other than the chance to learn something new to head out to find these research materials once she decides she has need of them. She will approve of anyone willing to learn, she will be happy to teach and impart knowledge to them.
In canon, her poor health can hinder her ability to recite her spells, and in some cases can get bad enough to render her bedridden for a day or two, but even then she still wants to do her work and research to the point of other members of the household needing to make sure she stays put and doesn't overwork herself. As can be imagined, Patchouli can prove to be a rather stubborn patient.
Patchouli isn't a very social person at all, she often has difficulty trying to socialize with other people. Small talk doesn't interest her much, if at all, she would much rather talk about her things she had recently studied and learned from, whatever theorems and other results she's got from her work. Large crowds will unsettle Patchouli, she will try to avoid such situations if she can. Small groups, at least, she can handle much more easily, she won't be adverse to a small party.
In canon, she holds little regard for most people other than her closest friend Remilia Scarlet herself, the rest of the Scarlet Devil Mansion residents. Later, she met Marisa Kirisame, who she can tolerate if she decides not to be a pest, and Alice Margatroid. Before the events of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (sixth game in the Touhou series of games) she was a total shut in, and went along with her vampire best friend's plan to blot out the sun with the scarlet mist. What did it matter to her what happened to Gensokyo, this land they just arrived in? Remilia was soon defeated, though, and everything went back to normal. Well, almost. Patchouli began to come out of her shell afterwards. She didn't really start getting involved with the incidents in Gensokyo again until a certain oni showed up, causing parties to happen every four days until she was stopped.
Unlike her canon self, she doesn't have poor health holding her back, if she had magic, she would be immensely powerful. Her experiences growing up has left her distrustful of most people, as such it can be hard to earn Patchouli's trust.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Patchouli's powers consist of the ability to create bolts of psychic force of varying power along with the ability to create force fields. Using her powers too much, however, can weaken her considerably; her asthma gets even worse, she begins to suffer the effects of anaemia and weakens her constitution greatly.
As it stands right now, she can only affect things 20 meters away, and only if it's in her line of sight, but as she practices her power, that range will increase until reaching roughly around 60 meters. The general strength of her bolts and forcefields at first have the strength of iron. As her power grows, so will the strength of her projections until they match the strength of the highest quality steel.
AU HISTORY: Patchouli was born to a rather average upper middle class family from the heart of London. She grew up without anything particularly unusual going on, just that she developed the penchant of being rather shy and preferring things like books to people in general. She grew up unaware of being a mutant like most tend to be. She was, however, quite bright from an early age, and as she grew, she was consistently the top of her class. This tended to alienate the other children she knew in her early life, so she had few friends. The unusual surname certainly didn't help matters...
At the age of fourteen her mutant ability began to manifest, first as a minor physical mutation that turned her hair violet. She was fortunate that hiding this was as simple as dying her hair it's original black colour. At age sixteen her powers truly began to manifest, first as an accidental discharge of a bolt of force. She was extremely fortunate it happened within her own home...
She didn't dare use her ability often, only practising with it in secluded areas... and never in the same place. This allowed her to continue her education unmolested. From school, to college, to university, earning herself a few degrees, including a Doctorate, that gave her a good deal of options for her career. She would have stayed in the UK under the radar if it were not for some trouble involving an unfortunate mutant and a group of louts at the start of 2015, forcing her to intervene. While she did scare them off, it also blew her cover wide open. Rather than enlist in government programs, as required of mutants, she decided to leave for for the US, taking her many rare books with her she had acquired over the past five years.
There she learned of the Xavier Institute. Seeing it as her best option, she contacted Charles Xavier. Apparently there was an opening for a librarian... So she took it. Besides, she needed to keep those books somewhere.
